While heart disease is considered one of the leading global killers, a recent study by the American Heart Association offers immense hope, revealing that simply adhering to preventive measures and controlling high blood pressure can save the lives of hundreds of thousands of people from certain death annually.
According to a study by the American Heart Association, improving preventive measures for high blood pressure can reduce cardiovascular disease-related deaths by more than 500,000 cases each year.
Dr. Scott Pilla, the lead researcher of the study, stated: "Controlling high blood pressure has reduced the number of deaths among patients with cardiovascular issues, followed by the use of statins for cholesterol and blood sugar control."
The researchers found that providing health care monitoring for approximately 80% of individuals with cardiovascular diseases could prevent 518,476 cardiovascular-related deaths annually. Additionally, using statin medications to control cholesterol levels can save 340,682 lives per year, while controlling blood sugar in diabetic patients can prevent 309,520 deaths.
To protect overall health, the American Heart Association outlines several crucial guidelines for preventing high blood pressure, most notably:
- Prioritizing the consumption of fruits and vegetables.
- Focusing on whole-grain foods and low-fat products.
- Drinking an adequate amount of water.
- Prioritizing proteins from fish, red meat, poultry, eggs, flaxseed, and corn.
- Consuming a specific, regulated daily calorie intake.
- Limiting sugar, fats, and fast food.
- Reducing and avoiding alcohol, energy drinks, and carbonated beverages.
- Getting a good quality of sleep.
- Avoiding smoking cigarettes and hookahs.
- Practicing positive thinking and psychological relaxation exercises.
