A peaceful and safe sleep for babies is every mother's dream, but a new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States sounds an alarming bell, revealing that the majority of sudden infant deaths are linked to common mistakes in sleep environments.
In a study observing 4,861 cases of sudden infant death between 2020 and 2024, the center found that 73% of the cases involved unsafe and dangerous sleep factors.
To protect infants' lives, Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician at George Washington University, outlined several important guidelines for safe infant sleep, including:
- Placing the baby on their back to sleep.
- Using a firm and safe crib or bassinet.
- Keeping toys away from the baby's sleep area.
- The baby's bed should be in the same room as the parents, but on a separate sleeping surface.
